About this plant

.Anthurium 'Big Bill' is a hybrid of Anthurium pendulifolium and Anthurium cubense. This is a pendant type Anthurium cultivar that is known to grow some of the largest leaves in the world! The leaves can grow up to 10 feet long!

People buy it for the leaf shape and texture rather than for flowers on young plants.

Expect steady growth when light and watering stay consistent. After shipping, give it one to two weeks to settle before you repot or fertilize.

Place it in medium to bright indirect light. Let dry out about halfway between waterings. Water thoroughly until it drains, then empty the saucer. Use a chunky, well-draining mix and empty the saucer after watering. 60% or higher preferred.

Care

Light

This Anthurium prefers strong, indirect light. Too little and growth slows noticeably.

Water

Let it dry out partway between waterings, avoiding both extremes, soggy roots and prolonged dryness both cause problems.

Humidity

Higher humidity keeps the foliage lush. A pebble tray or humidifier nearby makes a noticeable difference.

Soil

A loose mix heavy on bark and perlite keeps the roots breathing, which is essential for this genus. Leaves on Anthurium 'Big Bill' get noticeably larger as the plant matures, so plan for the eventual size when picking a permanent spot.

Feeding

Feed lightly during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength every 4 weeks or so.

Common problems

  • Brown, crispy leaf tips: usually low humidity.
  • Yellowing leaves or a soft stem: overwatering or poor drainage, check the roots.
  • Slow growth or stalled leaves: often too little light or cold temperatures.
  • Faded pattern or veining: too much direct light, move it back from the window slightly.

Difficulty

Intermediate
