Cold temperatures can be tough on plants during transit! If your local daytime high temperatures are below 45°F, we strongly recommend adding Winter Shipping Insurance to your order. If you live in a particularly frigid area, we also recommend selecting an Express shipping method at checkout for the fastest transit time. All standard orders ship via FedEx Home Delivery, unless an Express option is selected at checkout.
What Winter Shipping Insurance Includes
Winter Shipping Insurance is available for $6 per order and provides added protection during cold-weather shipping. When this insurance is purchased, our team will take additional precautions at our discretion based on weather conditions along your order’s route.
These precautions may include:
- Heat pack(s)
- Additional insulation or packing materials
- Adjusted packing methods
- Holding your order for up to two weeks to avoid unsafe weather conditions
Our team monitors temperatures throughout the plant’s journey and makes packing and timing decisions with plant health as the priority. If a plant arrives with severe cold-related damage, orders protected by Winter Shipping Insurance are eligible for a replacement or store credit. We do not issue refunds.
Why Does Winter Shipping Insurance Cost Extra?
Shipping plants safely in winter often requires additional materials, labor, and flexibility in timing. The $6 Winter Shipping Insurance fee helps cover these added precautions when temperatures drop.
Orders Without Winter Shipping Insurance
If Winter Shipping Insurance is not added to your order, standard packing will be used.
Without Winter Shipping Insurance:
- No heat pack(s), insulation, or additional packing methods will be used
- Weather conditions will not be monitored for your shipment
- Order holds will not be allowed
- Cold related damage is not covered
What Winter Shipping Insurance Does Not Cover
Winter Shipping Insurance is designed specifically to protect plants from severe cold exposure.
It does not cover:
- Lost or stolen packages
- Orders delivered to an incorrect or outdated address
- Cosmetic damages that occur while shipping a live plant, which could include: bruised leaves, broken stem, bent stem, cracked leaf, etc.
Adding Winter Shipping Insurance to an Existing Order
Winter Shipping Insurance may be added any time before your order ships. Once a shipping label has been printed, Winter Shipping Insurance can no longer be added to the order. Please ensure it is included on your order before shipment if cold weather may be a concern.
Order Holds & Winter Shipping Insurance
Orders with Winter Shipping Insurance may be held for up to two weeks if weather conditions are unsafe for shipping. This allows us to wait for a safer window and reduce the risk of cold damage during transit.
Why Didn’t My Order Include a Heat Pack / Insulation?
Heat pack(s) and insulation are used at our discretion and only when necessary. Some plants are sensitive to prolonged warmth, and in certain conditions heat packs can cause damage rather than prevent it. Likewise, insulation may not be required if temperatures along the shipping route are within a safe range.
Our team considers:
- Plant species and tolerance
- Duration of transit
- Temperatures along the full shipping route
Packing decisions are made carefully to best protect your plants.
Filing a Winter Shipping Insurance Claim
If your plants receive cold damage, please make sure to file your claim within 48 hours of receiving your package. Claims that have been sent after 48 hours may not be approved.
