Alocasia maharani — nicknamed “Grey Dragon” — is a jewel Alocasia that punches well above its size. This compact miniature elephant ear produces thick, rigid leaves in a distinctive grey-green color with a rough, almost pebbly (bullate) texture and bold, contrasting veining. It’s a plant that rewards close inspection: the surface detail on each leaf is extraordinary.
Maharani is frequently compared to Alocasia Black Velvet and Alocasia Melo, but it occupies its own niche. It grows slightly larger than Black Velvet, with less pronounced bullate texture than Melo, and its grey coloration is uniquely its own. A compact grower that typically reaches 1–2 feet, making it ideal for shelves, desks, and smaller spaces.
Care guide: Bright indirect light brings out the best contrast in the foliage; avoid direct sun, which can bleach the leaves. Plant in a well-draining aroid mix rich in organic matter. Allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings — Alocasia prefer not to have consistently wet roots, but should not be allowed to dry out completely. Higher humidity (60%+) is preferred. A rewarding jewel Alocasia for collectors who appreciate texture and detail over size.
Additional information:
Alocasia is a genus of plants in the Aroid family native to many parts of Asia including but not limited to Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Australia.
There are at least 90 officially recognized Alocasia species, with more discovered and properly named every year. Alocasia come in all sizes, from small to large. Jewel types like Black Velvet tend to stay on the bushier, more compact side.
Alocasia are rhizomatous or tuberous and self reproduce from corms.
Alocasia can go dormant during the cooler months, so try to provide your plant with temperatures above 50deg to ensure that they stay happy and healthy during this period.
