Hoya mitrata 'Splash' is a collector-favorite form of Hoya mitrata, distinguished by its striking silver splash variegation scattered across the surface of each leaf. The base foliage is a deep, waxy green — typical of the mitrata species — but the Splash form adds irregular silver-grey mottling that gives each leaf an almost metallic, speckled quality. Native to Southeast Asia, mitrata is a larger-leafed Hoya species that makes a bold impression compared to the smaller, more delicate members of the genus, and the Splash variegation elevates it further into collector territory.

Hoya mitrata is a vining climber that performs beautifully in a hanging basket or trained up a trellis. It's a moderately fast grower for a Hoya, and like all members of the genus it will eventually reward patient growers with clusters of star-shaped flowers — in mitrata's case, blooms with a distinctive, pleasant fragrance. The Splash form is particularly sought after because the silver mottling tends to be most vivid and pronounced on new growth, making each emerging leaf an event.

Care guide: Bright indirect light is essential for maintaining the silver splash variegation and for encouraging blooming — insufficient light causes the mottling to fade and slows growth significantly. Plant in a well-draining mix rich in organic matter. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings; Hoyas are highly susceptible to root rot if left sitting in excess water and will tolerate underwatering far better than overwatering. Average household humidity is fine, though higher humidity encourages faster, lusher growth. A stunning and rewarding collector Hoya that earns its place in any serious collection.
